how many
We take ourselves upon the stronger parent—
or same sex—so say psychologists
(in theory). How many parents in the lot?
One or two, that ought to cover it.
See that poet leaning on the doorstep?
Watch her counting, scanning lines. How many?
Four, but they don't fit. How many? Five—
all are lucky, no one has to die.
